Acupuncture was developed more than 2,000 years ago in China. It has been widely used in hospitals in China and since the 1970s has experienced rapid growth as a complimentary medicine in western countries. It is based on the traditional Chinese medicine theory that in order for us to be alive and have optimal health, an energy or life force called Qi, flows through invisible meridians or channels in our body.

Diseases occur when the balance or flow of Qi is interrupted. This can be due to stress, poor diet, weather conditions, physical trauma, hereditary factors and exposure to pathogens.

Acupuncture needles are inserted in specific points on the meridian to stimulate the flow of Qi and in turn restore health.

Acupuncture has been recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be effective for conditions such as muskelo-skeletal pain and arthritis, neurological conditions such as facial paralysis, menstrual and digestive disorders and allergies.

It’s holistic approach in balancing the flow of Qi and improving overall wellbeing of the patient makes it ideal for preventative health care.

Dr. Tracey Ho is a qualified acupuncturist and has a masters degree in Applied Science Acupuncture. She was trained at the Nanjing hospital in China. She practices acupuncture and Chiropractic at our Ayr practice and the West End practice in Glasgow.

Acupuncture has been practiced along side chiropractic treatment to help enhance healing. By needling into muscle trigger points, a local inflammatory response is produced causing an increase in blood flow to the area which has an effect of relaxing the muscle. This will allow the subluxated vertebrae to be corrected easier and the effects of the chiropractic adjustment to last longer.
